Daniel and Crusher stopped. They had been walking at a furious pace for four hours, getting away from the psychic fumbles of Agent Justice. Crusher was determined and pushed them on despite Danielâs obvious exhaustion. Daniel fell to the ground. His legs throbbed. Crusher stared at the boy.
âCome onâ weâve got to keep moving,â Crusher grunted.
âWhy?â Daniel complained.
âKillâs forces are here. There will be more coming soon.â
âMore Champions too?â Daniel asked hopefully.
âYeahâprobably,â Crusher said, taking off his pack and setting it down. He could see that Daniel needed a break.
âThen why donât we wait? You can just drop me off and go,â Daniel said as he took out his canteen.
âYeah, because that worked so well last time.â
âNoâ now I understand the plan. It will work.â
âNot likely. Theyâve found the safe house by now and itâs probably toast. Not sure how far away the next one is. Besides we donât want to get in the middle of a full-blown conflagration.â
âOh,â Daniel said.
Crusher scanned the horizonâthey were nestled behind a stack of rusted cars but he wanted to be sure they were out of sight.
âEarlier you said you knew that Dreadknight,â Crusher said, momentarily satisfied they were concealed. âWhat did you mean by that?â
âI meant I knew him,â Daniel said. âHis name was Ashton James. He was from Territory Five. He went to school with me. He was just a few years older than me.â
âThat doesnât make any sense, Daniel.â
âYou donât believe me?â
âThe Rollie must have just looked like him. Rollies are usually Outlandersâ brainwashed Outlanders.â
âI know it was him. I know it. He was pretty popular. Lots of girls liked him,â Daniel said, remembering Ashton in the library with that girl Kelly Strang. It was so long ago but he knew it was the same boy.
âThat just doesnât make any sense,â Crusher said but with a hesitant tone.
âHow could he be a Rollie?â Daniel wondered out loud. âHow?â
âGood question.â
âMaybe like that Alliance officer who let you go.â
âWhat?â Crusher said, shocked and suddenly suspicious. âHow did you knowâ?â
âWhen you were trapped, he turned your mind-band off,â Daniel said matter-of-factly.
âHow do youâ?â Crusher started and couldnât stop himself. He grabbed Daniel and lifted him off the ground. âHow do you know that, Daniel? No one knows that. How could you know that?â
âThe telepathâ Agent Justiceâ she showed meâback there before we leftâ.â
âWhat else did she show you?â Crusher asked, angry and surprised. He was an inch away from Danielâs face and the boy could see Crusherâs teeth and feel his angry hot breath. He could eat me if he wanted, thought Daniel in a flash of fright.
âYouâ fighting some Dreadknights⦠with Ultra,â Daniel stuttered. âThe man in the shadows⦠you were tied up.â
Daniel was scared, dangling from this giantâs armsâhe knew the man could break him like a twig.
âDid the telepath show you what else happened?â Crusher said, still yelling. âBefore I ran?â
âThe man had a gun. â
âPointed at my headâ when someone points a gun at your head and says run, you do what he wants.
